GET READY FOR A NEW METEOR SHOWER: May 24th could be a big day for meteor astronomy. That’s when Earth is expected to pass through a cloud of debris from comet 209P/LINEAR, producing a never-before-seen meteor shower. Meteor rates could exceed 200 per hour, and some forecasters have even mentioned the possibility of a meteor storm. Get the full story from Science@NASA.
AN UPTICK IN SOLAR ACTIVITY: The sunspot number is increasing this week as a crowd of dark cores emerges over the sun’s eastern limb. Click to view a 3-day movie from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), and count the spots as they appear:
U.S. marriage rates have reached historic lows in recent years. Since 1970 — when about 74 marriages happened annually for every 1,000 unmarried women — the marriage rate declined by nearly 60%, dropping to 31 marriages per 1,000 unmarried women by 2012, the National Center for Family and Marriage Research at Bowling Green State University found.
The descent is even more pronounced for millennials. In 1960, a little over two-thirds (68%) of all 20-somethings were married. In 2008, just 26% were hitched, according to the Pew Research Center.
In researching for this article I came across an interesting list of 65 Health Risks from GMO Foods on the Institute for Responsible Technology’s website. A quick scan of this list will show you that our species is headed for disaster if this continues. As you review the data on the page labelled “Health Risks” you will see that GMO’s cause allergies, liver damages and infertility. Rats fed GMO foods were rendered infertile within 3 generations. I recommend that you spend some time reading and learning on this website. It may sound cliche but our children really are our future and this will destroy them.
Gazprom has become the world’s biggest public company in terms of EBITDA, leaving Apple and ExxonMobil behind. In a separate development, the Rothschild Investment Corporation has been reported to be actively buying Gazprom shares.
It is therefore unsurprising that Gazprom’s increasingly cheaper shares have provoked an increased interest from the Rothschild dynasty. In the first quarter of 2014, the Rothschild Investment Corporation increased its investment in Gazprom ADRs (American depositary receipts) sevenfold, to $1.7 million, according to the statement the corporation filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
“For a dynasty which has for many years been a symbol of wealth and power, this is not a significant amount.
A UC Santa Barbara student alleges her black studies professor warned any “Ted Cruz-supporting ‘tea baggers’ to get the hell out of his classroom before he sent them home to their mother in a body bag.”
This was reportedly on the very first day of class last fall. The course, offered by Professor Otis Madison, was titled “The Obama Phenomenon.”
When the IRS was targeting conservative groups seeking tax exempt status for special scrutiny, they demanded the list of donors supporting those groups in 17 cases. Despite assurances from the agency that the lists had been destroyed, a search requested by Congress revealed that at least 3 lists had survived.
And of the donors on those lists, fully 10% of the individuals had been audited.
The rate of audits for ordinary Americans is about 1%.
Now, the House Ways and Means Oversight Committee is demanding that the Government Accountability Office investigate the IRS to see why so many Tea Party donors were audited.
When you combine the number of people that receive their daily bread, from tax payer funds, with the number of people who work for government I dare say it will be impossible to have an election that ever removes the corrupt from office. Who is going to vote against their pay check or the food on their table?
Sadly, it appears, the soup line is here to stay.
The meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and visiting U.S. National Security Adviser Susan Rice in Jerusalem on Wednesday demonstrates the extent of Israel’s difference of opinion with the Obama administration over the Iranian nuclear issue.
Rice stressed during the meeting that the U.S. administration believes diplomacy is the best way to stop Iran’s nuclear program.
The Prime Minister’s Bureau did not release details of Netanyahu’s own comments to Rice, but an hour after the meeting sent out quotes of the prime minister’s remarks on the matter in a meeting with members of Friends of the IDF – U.S. , in which he declared Israel’s concern that a “bad deal” in the making.
While most mainstream media is focused on villainizing Putin and the ongoing ‘diplomacy’ in Ukraine, we warned Monday of the dramatically escalating tensions between Vietnam and China over oil-drilling in disputed waters. The initial verbal to and fro – Vietnam angry at the move and China shunning them – was followed by physical interactions (multiple rammings and water-cannon use) and the US then got involved (laying the blame firmly at China’s foot calling the move “provocative”). The capital markets appear a little more concerned about where this ‘tension’ leads as the Vietnamese stock market crashed almost 6% – its largest drop in 13 years..
Despite all the words – and equity market rallies (confirming that it must be true) – it would appear Mr. Putin and his men have been quietly “not” preparing for all-out war (which makes us wonder, aside from the ICBMs, just what it would look like if they were actually preparing for war). Below is a clip of today’s “simulated massive nuclear attack” drills conducted in Russia. It is in short, stunning.
In case US destroyers operating in the Black Sea was not sufficiently clear of the western approach to containing Russia, the latest naval news will hardly boost the de-escalation theme. Reuters reports that earlier today Britain had deployed a destroyer to track a Russian aircraft carrier sailing close to its coastal waters, “the latest in a series of such incidents and a reminder of underlying tensions between London and Moscow.”
The reason the Russian navy is suddenly a concern to Britain is because the Admiral Kuznetsov, which is capable of carrying up to 26 fixed-wing fighters and 24 helicopters, had completed a deployment as part of Moscow’s naval force in the Mediterranean “and was on its way back to its base of Severomorsk in north-west Russia.” As part of this return, the carrier is to pass in proximity to the British isles, so just in case it gets any ideas, the UK is preparing a welcome party.
The Russian military fired a Topol intercontinental ballistic missile from its northern test site in Plesetsk, as well as “several” shorter-range missiles from its submarines in the Northern and Pacific Fleets, news agencies cited defence officials as saying.
Remember when Putin “de-escalated” and promised the Russian forces were being pulled back from the Ukraine border? That didn’t last long. Fast forward 24 hours, when we learn that the very same Putin oversaw a military exercise involving Russia’s nuclear forces.

Despite JPY and bonds not playing along, US equities (courtesy of the squeeze of the “most shorted”) had rallied mightily this morning. Then, all of a sudden – reality hit with some rather ominous-sounding threats from Russia:
*RUSSIA SAYS WILL RESPOND TO BROADER U.S., CANADA SANCTIONS
*RUSSIA SAYS FORCED TO RESPOND TO ‘UNFRIENDLY ACTIONS’
*RUSSIA SAYS SANCTIONS ‘NOT OUR METHOD’
So if ‘sanctions’ are not their method? Then what is? It seems that uncertainty was enough to spook bonds (yields plunged) and JPY (strength) and take the shine modestly off of VIX/Stocks.
Yesterday we correctly predicted that while the world is distracted by this and that, the next real short-term catalyst is the east Ukraine referendum vote on Sunday, whose results would be available as soon as May 11, indicating that, almost with 100% certainty, the Ukraine region would vote to become independent.
The disease, which first appeared in the kingdom in September 2012, has now infected a total number 449 Saudis, accounting for the bulk of cases registered across the globe.
The U.S. announced on Tuesday it was sending personnel and equipment to help Nigerian security forces.
Jonathan confirmed that he has accepted the American assistance, which the Pentagon said Wednesday will include communications, logistics and intelligence planning, but will not include any military operations. Britain and China said Nigeria had accepted their offers of help, and France said it was sending in a “specialized team” to help with search and rescue of the girls.
HILLARY FOUGHT TO KEEP BOKO HARAM OFF TERROR LIST
Hillary Clinton’s public outrage at the abduction of hundreds of schoolgirls by a Islamist Nigerian rebel group ignores the role the 2016 Democratic frontrunner had in preventing the group from being designated as a terrorist organization. From The Daily Beast: “The State Department under Hillary Clinton fought hard against placing the al Qaeda-linked militant group Boko Haram on its official list of foreign terrorist organizations for two years. And now, lawmakers and former U.S. officials are saying that the decision may have hurt the American government’s ability to confront the Nigerian group that shocked the world by abducting hundreds of innocent girls….
Add another drop of tragedy to the story of America’s reluctant, no-boots-on-the-ground operation in Libya in 2011: Weapons that were never secured after Muammar Gaddafi’s ouster made their way to Boko Haram, the Islamist terrorist organization now holding hundreds of Nigerian girls.
I just read an article that the UN backed by Iran rescued Rebels from the Syrian city of Homs as Assad was retaking it. The rebels were quoted as saying “The rest of the world failed us.” They also said that Iran was the only one that could rescue them, and it show’s that Iran, not Russia is stronger. The implications of this is unbelievable. The UN sends teams to Syria to rescue Rebels. (More) They can rescue murderers but they can’t rescue school girls and put a stop to this slaughter of innocents? We can’t let the world wide attention and outcry for this to cease or grow silent. This beast is growing, and it’s time for the world leaders to be accountable.
U.S. Marines captured this incredible footage of what looks like a UFO hovering over a Taliban encampment – then blowing it to kingdom come.
There can be no doubt now that what we have here is the remnants of human habitation from a very ancient era. The building techniques and artefacts do not match any known Ecuadorian culture. What we need to do now is have samples tested, dated, and examined by relevant experts.
