THE 1st WAR MARCH
“It is not something that I feel is really part of this conversation,” Cecile Richards of Planned Parenthood told Fusion’s Jorge Ramos on Thursday. “I don’t know if it’s really relevant to the conversation.”
What a difference a week makes. Last weekend we were finishing up the winter Olympics and staging a coup in Kiev. This weekend we contemplate consequences in Crimea and World War III as Russia rushes troops into Sevastopol and Simferopol and talks about their nuclear capabilities. I shudder to think what next weekend will bring.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s talks with US President Barack Obama next week are likely to prove crucial for determining whether peace negotiations with the Palestinians have a future beyond April
The premier leaves Sunday for a series of meetings in Washington squarely focused on two key issues: the fate of the US-led peace process in light of an April 29 deadline, and nuclear talks between world powers and Iran.
Current US foreign policy in a nutshell: Barack Obama tells Vladimir Putin “there will be costs” if Russia invades Ukraine. What does Putin do? He invades Ukraine. Only this time it’s official: AP reports that the Kremlin says Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked parliament for permission to use the country’s military in Ukraine. Putin says the move is needed to protect ethnic Russians and the personnel of a Russian military base in Ukraine’s strategic region of Crimea.
The UN Security Council is holding an emergency meeting today after the Russian parliament gave president Vladimir Putin the go-ahead to send troops into Crimea following unrest in Ukraine.
The meeting has been organised at the request of the UK, according to a diplomat from Luxembourg.
More importantly, it appears Putin is not very concerned about the impact his actions will have on equity futures when they open for trading on Sunday evening: but… but… the artificial “on paper” wealth effect. On the other hand, he certainly has a lot of concern to keep geopolitical events of the type that keep the price of crude high, always at arms length.
Obama did not attend the WH national security meeting on Ukraine but was briefed by natsec adviser Susan Rice.
“Well, it’s Friday. It’s after 5 o’clock. So, this is now officially happy hour with the Democratic party,” the president told his cohorts. “I can do that. It is an executive action. I have the authority.”
An audience member then asked the president to “tell us about your plans for nuclear war with Russia.”
“What the heck are you talking about?” Mr. Obama said to laughter and applause. “No, no, don’t worry about it. We’re OK. Have a seat. I don’t know anything about that plan. I don’t know what you’ve been reading. Let me return to what I was talking about. See, he thought happy hour started earlier.”
A meeting of the American principals in the National Security Council— Kerry, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff Martin Dempsey, and CIA chief John Brennan— were seen meeting at the White House with the president on Saturday.
Full meetings of the principals are rare, and were last seen during the crisis with Syria over the use of chemical weapons in that country last August.
Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Wednesday the military was engaged in talks with Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Algeria, Cyprus, the Seychelles, Vietnam and Singapore.
The countries are all strategically located – in three leftist-ruled countries close to the U.S.; towards either end of the Mediterranean; in the Indian Ocean south of the Gulf of Aden; and near some of the world’s most important shipping lanes in the Malacca Strait and South China Sea.
Part of this information an be verified by DEBKAfile:
“Along with US warnings to Moscow, a high alert was secretly declared Saturday by the US Mediterranean Sixth Fleet. Two US warships which had been deployed in the Black Sea to back up Russian security for the Olympic Winter Games in Sochi – the USS Taylor Frigate and the USS Mount Whitney Blue Ridge-class command ship – have moved over to the western side of the Black Sea opposite Crimea and facing the Russian navy base of Sevastopol.”
As for the reports of NATO putting troops on the ground in Western Ukraine I cannot verify this yet. And this is the only and original source of that information as far as I can tell. So when I know more, you will know more on that as well.

The Russian Federation on Saturday approved the armed invasion of Ukraine, prompting alarm and condemnation from governments worldwide over the violation of a nation’s sovereignty, a people’s rights to self-governance, and the greater stability of Eastern Europe.
Russia’s upper house of parliament will ask President Vladimir Putin to recall Moscow’s ambassador from the United States, the chamber’s speaker said on Saturday.

The tensions on the northern border following Israel’s alleged strike in Lebanon have not skipped over the Golan Heights. The IDF Northern Command’s decision to raise the level of alert fearing a Hezbollah retaliation also affects the border with Syria, that has turned into a border as dangerous and as sensitive as the Lebanese border.
Israel’s northern front is far more sensitive at present than one might glean from the media, and more than the public is aware. The accepted wisdom on the Israeli side until now was that, in the north, there is nothing new under the sun.
There’s good propaganda and bad propaganda. Bad propaganda is generally crude, amateurish Judy Miller “mobile weapons lab-type” nonsense that figures that people are so stupid they’ll believe anything that appears in “the paper of record.” Good propaganda, on the other hand, uses factual, sometimes documented material in a coordinated campaign with the other major media to cobble-together a narrative that is credible, but false.
The so called Fed’s transcripts, which were released last week, fall into the latter category.
The transcripts (1,865 pages) reveal the details of 14 emergency meetings of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) in 2008, when the financial crisis was at its peak and the Fed braintrust was deliberating on how best to prevent a full-blown meltdown. But while the conversations between the members are accurately recorded, they don’t tell the gist of the story or provide the context that’s needed to grasp the bigger picture. Instead, they’re used to portray the members of the Fed as affable, well-meaning bunglers who did the best they could in ‘very trying circumstances’. While this is effective propaganda, it’s basically a lie, mainly because it diverts attention from the Fed’s role in crashing the financial system, preventing the remedies that were needed from being implemented (nationalizing the giant Wall Street banks), and coercing Congress into approving gigantic, economy-killing bailouts which shifted trillions of dollars to insolvent financial institutions that should have been euthanized.
Near-Bankrupt Rome Bailed Out As Italy Unemployment Rises To All Time High, Grows By Most On Record In 2013
A few days ago, we reported that, seemingly out of the blue, the city of Rome was on the verge of a “Detroit-style bankruptcy.” In the article, Guido Guidesi, a parliamentarian from the Northern League, was quoted as saying “It’s time to stop the accounting tricks and declare Rome’s default.” Of course, that would be unthinkable: we said that if “if one stops the accounting tricks, not only Rome, but all of Europe, as well as the US and China would all be swept under a global bankruptcy tsunami. So it is safe to assume that the tricks will continue. Especially when one considers that as Mirko Coratti, head of Rome’s city council said on Wednesday, “A default of Italy’s capital city would trigger a chain reaction that could sweep across the national economy.” Well we can’t have that, especially not with everyone in Europe living with their head stuck in the sand of universal denial, assisted by the soothing lies of Mario Draghi and all the other European spin masters.” And just as expected, yesterday Rome was bailed out.
